For the longest time I was a colorful dresser, but when I was 21, that really changed. I became 90% neutral, swapping out sweet pastels and cheery brights for pieces in more reserved shades of taupe, grey, and black. This may seem like a change that just comes with age, but in reality, my entire lifestyle was changing. I was traveling like crazy: living abroad, working summer internships in new cities, and now, of course, living on the road full-time. With limited closet space and lots of the world left to see, I found myself relying more on more on the endless versatility of neutrals. This palette can be dressed up or down, equally appropriate for a board meeting as it is for a night on the town. With a solid lineup of neutral pieces in place, take it to the next level by layering them in unexpected ways for a fresh, or even unexpected, look. My personal favorite trick to elevate a basic T-shirt and jeans is to add layered necklaces — this provides a wow factor without compromising your comfort.
