How I Travel Full-Time and Run Everly

By far, the number one question I get asked is how I work while traveling full-time and run Everly. Well, today I am sharing exactly how we do it. It was a learning curve, to say the least, but we are all so proud of how far we’ve taken what was once this far-reaching dream.

How I travel full-time and run my businesses:

This is something that took a bit of creativity and a ton of hard work to make a reality, but somehow we found a way to make it work. I obviously blog, I am finishing up my e-Book (which after so many edits, will hopefully be released by late summer) and I founded and run Everly Rings.

I’ll jus start off by saying that running an online business (like blogging, online styling or writing an e-book) is so different than running a business based around tangible goods (like rings). It was a huge learning curve for the first few months after our re-brand last October, but we finally have it down.

The Everly office is back in Ames, Iowa – where I went to college at Iowa State University. This seemed like such a natural choice for me because I could hire people who learned the same curriculum that I did, so it was very easy to fill in the gaps for what they needed to know and what they already did. As a bonus, I was also hiring on people who wanted a career with a fashion company, not just a job. We now have three employees, plus myself working remotely.

When creating systems and processes for Everly, I created a sense of ownership an independence for all of my employees. I know this type of job isn’t for everyone, but I worked really hard to find the perfect team members who really had a desire to do more than a passive side job.

All of The Everly Girls (as I call them) can work whenever they want – there are no schedules or assigned hours. Yes, you read that right. This was one of our founding principles to not only be our best for our customers, but for our team members as well. They coordinate with each other and make sure one person can get orders shipped out each day. This creates a really flexible job that allows them to work when they feel most productive. Some people are morning people. Some people hit their productivity peak at midnight. I want my girls to work when it works best for them and best for Everly.

Secondly, in case you missed this, Everly is 100% online. We have no physical stores. This has been imperative to our success. This allows the girls to have flexibility, a lot less overhead and above all else, it makes it so we can be very innovative.

Now, let’s talk logistics. So we have The Everly Team going into our office to unpack shipments, pack orders and take care of our customers in whatever way they need us. You might be wondering how I fit into that equation. We made everything for Everly in Google Sheets, Docs and Slides. These are basically self-updating Excel sheets, Word Docs and Power Points that allow all of us to have the most up-to-date information.

We keep things like orders, completed orders, inventory, exchanges, returns, in-coming shipments and numerical data in our Google Sheet. This way, our Everly Team can work from their bed if they really feel like it. They have all the information at their finger tips to help customers, answer emails and carry out daily operations.

Because I’m not physically there that often (I try to fly back every few months), I mainly handle the website, photography, creating listings, social media, marketing emails, sale strategy, designing our collections, overall assortment strategy (like what styles we should clearance versus styles we should sit deeper in), buying operations and overall supervision. But to be honest, I have such an incredible team. They all have amazing entrepreneurial spirits and really treat Everly as if it was their own business. They also share the passion to do everything possible for our customers and I empower them to do whatever they think is best and use good judgement.

On top of all of this, we have a team chat going 24-7 so we can communicate easily about little things. We have a team meeting every week that we all Skype into. We all are loving the flexibility and how incredible it is to be in a start-up and know that everything we do each day is writing our future.

We have so many incredible designs coming up in our future collections and seriously can not wait to share them all with you.

I would highly suggest since you dont have a physical store to do videos of the rings to see how they look on the hand and interact with light. Brings it to life.

      Hi Jackie,

That is such a great idea. We wanted to add a video component to the site for a very long time. Thank you for the recommendation!

I love the fact that you don’t have set hours. I think more companies need to do that, because it is true, everyone is productive at different times. I’m currently reading your interview with the gloss and you have become a huge inspiration to me. I’m 21, in school, about to start a blog, and hope to one day own my beauty company. can’t wait to see where you go with this!

      Hi Jillian,

Thank you so so much. I really try to leave the industry and my team members lives better than when and where we started. Have a great day!
