Casual in Lima (With A Carry-On Style Hack)

I admit it’s been a couple of months now since we were in Peru, but I haven’t had a chance to post this yet due to the insanity that is my life as a business owner! In this case, the craziness works in my favor, since this outfit is now seasonally appropriate almost everywhere, not just in South America.

I can’t tell you what it is exactly, but South America has my heart 100%. Maybe it’s the fierceness of the people, the beauty of the various cultures, the all-encompassing warmth (in both the weather and the residents), or the out-of-this-world food. Most likely, it’s the magical combination of all these things that makes me want to explore every square foot.

As I’ve said before many times, I will never check a bag at the airport, so I am strictly a carry-on traveler (and don’t even get me started on this new “personal item” bullsh*t many airlines are starting to pull… oh well, it just gives me an opportunity to get even more creative).

On my trip to Peru, I broke out a trick that I haven’t utilized since my Italy days (for those of you who are new around here, I once studied abroad in Florence, Italy, for 4 months with only one suitcase, never repeating a single outfit). An oldie, but a goodie.

Here’s the trick: take any dress made of a thinner material and strategically tuck it into pants or a skirt to give it the illusion (and versatility) of a top. This was one of my go-to tricks back in the day, and I loved bringing it out again in Peru — that’s right, the chambray “top” you see here is indeed a dress! This little cheat opens up a whole new world of possibilities for your dresses and practically doubles the number of outfits you can create on the go, which is absolutely essential for the carry-on life.
