Every year seems to have an overriding and reoccurring style theme. 2013 was the year of unexpected color pairings, 2014 was mixing and matching like a pro. With 2015 just beginning, I can already tell, this is the year of extremes.
Attention-grabbing volume, tantalizing textures and neutral in new ways will be what all the fashionistas are coveting. There will be a daring juxtaposition of nostalgic elements versus ultra modern and extreme structure against cozy collapsible knits – contradicting elements coexisting simultaneously. All of which, I’m a huge fan of.
Lately, the uber casual look has took center stage, but going forward an mix of mens tailoring in lax silhouettes with feminine details will strike the perfectly mixed ensemble. Conservative comfort will take form with turtlenecks and lackadaisical knits. These looks will be dressed up with vintage and girly accents like faux fur snoods, metallic footwear and personalized jewelry.
1. Blanket Scarf
You’ve seen it on every it-girls Insta – it’s the blanket scarf. The impossibly cozy and oversized scarf makes the statement in any wintery look. Pair it with a felt fedora and your favorite jacket for an equally practical and on-point ensemble. The most drool-worthy ones are plaid or tartan with a variety of hues encompassed in a single plaid.
We’re not talking about the cape from your brother’s 5th grade Superman Halloween costume. Think super chic knits, leather trims and cuddly cashmere. Layer with a striped long sleeve or layer with your favorite scarf for a one way ticket to the perfect cold-weather chic.
3. Flare Jeans
After what seems like an eternity of circulation cutting, painted on denim, the freeness of flare are back in full swing. The 70s style is made modern with a sleek, dark rinse and a lower rise. Opt for a more throwback vibe with a lighter rinse or a high-rise.
4. Camel Blazer
The collegiate staple meets this years most sophisticatedly-stylish hue: camel. From preppy to edgy, this piece seems to work in just about every styling situation. Pair with a leather jogger pant to edge up the classic piece (with a pop of leopard), or go for the tried-and-true route of a basic blouse and statement necklace.
5. Turtleneck Sweaters
The previously prejudged piece is making a comeback in luxe materials and trendy pairings. Go for a sleek and Euro-inspired look with leather pants, a chignon and your favorite lipstick. Go for a looser, more cowl-neck style for a relaxed vibe or a perfectly fitted option to layer.
Vests are making a comeback in a big way. Gone are the fitted and cropped vest styles and welcomed are the trench vests and other longer, more dramatic silhouettes. Try styling this piece with a fitted dress, over the knee boots and your favorite scarf for a subtly sexy guise.
7. Faux Fur Elements
This animalistic add-on can be just the things to elevate your entire look. There are endless ways to incorporate this texture, but my personal favorites are though a faux fur snood or faux fur vest. It leans itself (and your entire look) to a bit of an antique vibe that I adore. Not to mention, it is also a faultless way to combat the cold in a tres chic fashion.
8. Menswear-Inspired Outerwear
A tailored and streamlined coat is the perfect blank slate to build a wintery get-up around. To add a ladylike element, try it in a pretty pastel or opt for a classic color like camel or grey. Keep the look in balance with skinny jeans and pumps or ankle booties.
9. Metallic Pumps
The already glitzy shoe of choice gets an even more glamorous twist with metallic this season. Try bronze, silver or gold that will be the most seamless way to upgrade your favorite basics.
10. Bow Blouses
On the other end of the style spectrum from the menswear trend lies billowing bows. With its impeccably womanly accent, think of it as the female equivalent to a tie (and feel free to layer it like one). Layer a bow blouse with a sweater, anything high-waisted or under any blazer for a polished and pretty look.
11. Embellished Sweaters
Sweaters are such an essential wardrobe staple that they are often overlooked. But not this season, your favorite knits are getting a sparkly face-lift. Feminine and glamorous embellishments are appearing everywhere, including a J.Crew nearest you. Try layering with a basic blouse for a fancy spin on preppy.
12. White Button-Down Blouses
People tend to underestimate the power of a basic button down. The collar detail is ideal for cold weather layering or the note of simplicity many looks need. For a more modern take on this mundane top, choose a more flowing silhouette. For a more classic sense, choose for a rigid color and fitted shape.
13. Personalized Jewels
Monograms have run mad for a while now, but proceeding forward, it’s all about layering these jewels. Look for pieces engraved with the primary letter of your name in form of midi rings, bracelets and my favorite, necklaces. This crease and air sentimental by nature and very custom.
14. Plaid Pieces
Schoolgirl-inspired plaid has been everywhere on everyone this season. Take tartan to the next level by doubling up on the preppy print, or go for a entire statement piece donning the pattern. Venture out to an entirely plaid blazer or dress.
15. Thigh-High Boots
This high-thigh style gives off a very high-end look. It’s warmer and more on trend than it’s mid-calf counterparts. In my personal opinion, you can never go wrong with black on black. If you are ready to amp your look up, try a mini dress or skirt for a glorious sliver of skin.
As always, thank you for reading.
